THREE TEAMS BUT ONE CLUB
All of our middle school and high school riders are participants in the Georgia Cycling Association's TeamMTB organization. The Chattahoochee Grippers Composite Team, our founding team, started in 2019 with just 7 riders. In 2021, the Southwest Atlanta Youth Mountain Bike Club (SWAY MTB) was formed to bring all teams under one organization, which expanded with the addition of two new teams: the Northgate Vikings and the Line Creek Shredders Composite Mountain Bike teams. As of 2025, we have over 50 riders across our middle school and high school teams and over 35 certified Youth MTB Coaches that support and teach our youth riders. We practice together and offer riders the option to compete in a series of races or participate as adventure (non-racing) riders.
The TeamMTB Program runs from July through October.
TEAM COMMUNICATION
All team communication is handled through our TeamSnap app. Once registered with the team, the team director or head coach will send an invite through email for the application. Once the app is downloaded onto your phone, it's a one-stop location for all team communication, schedule of events, practice plans, and more.
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
HELMET
With safety rating certified for mountain biking that fits your head snuggly but comfortably. The helmet should be free of dents, cracks, or defects. We recommend helmets be replaced every two years.
NUTRITION
Water bottle is mandatory! Don't forget to bring a water bottle and a snack on those hot summer days! Staying hydrated and fueled will help you stay energized and ride your best!
CLOTHING
Clothing appropriate for the weather (warm layers and a rain jacket if necessary, or light breathable clothing for when it gets hot)
BIKE
Geared mountain bike with knobby tires of at least 26-inch tires.
REPAIR GEAR
A tube that fits your tire, tire levers, and a mini pump. A quick link that fits your chain is also a good idea.
SHOES
Closed-toed athletic shoes or mountain bike specific shoes

"Coaches are the key component for allowing SWAY MTB Club to provide mountain bike opportunities for our youth riders. As a cycling coach, you have the opportunity to be a positive influence on the lives of our riders."
COACHING:
Unlike other youth sports programs, parents who want to participate and ride along with the team at practices are welcome to join the team as coaches. In 2024 SWAY MTB had 35+ registered coaches to facilitate our multi-group practice plans. A typical practice ride with the Grippers consists of multiple groups based on ability with each group requiring lead and sweep coaches. For more information on coaching, please see our Coaches Page or Contact Us for more information.
